Improv U runs improv classes for adults in Winter Park, just north of downtown Orlando. You don’t need acting experience, a funny bone or a plan. You just need to show up and say “yes, and.” Our classes are for first-timers, nervous talkers, actors, comedians and anyone who wants to think faster on their feet.
Start with a $10 drop-in class
Every Tuesday at 6:30 pm we run a drop-in improv class at St. John Church in Winter Park. It costs $10 at the door, with no sign-up or commitment. Each class is a fresh set of games and scenes, so you can come once or every week. It’s the easiest way to try improv in Orlando before you commit to a full course.
What happens in an improv class?
You’ll warm up with simple group games, then move into short scenes with a partner. Instructors coach you as you go: how to listen, how to build on a partner’s idea, and how to commit to a choice. Nobody is put on the spot alone, and nobody is graded. Most people are surprised by how quickly they relax and start laughing.
Skills you’ll take home
- Listening closely instead of planning what to say next
- Speaking up with confidence in meetings, interviews and conversations
- Handling surprises without freezing
- Building on other people’s ideas instead of shutting them down
Go further: courses, jams and shows
- Advanced Improv for Performance ($175, Thursdays at 6:30 pm): eight classes for students ready to build longer scenes, ending with a featured performance at the Monday Jam.
- Monday Jam (free, Mondays at 6:30 pm): open practice time to play scenes with other improvisers.
- National Guest Artist Series: workshops and shows with touring improv teachers.
- The Secret Illegal Comedy Show: our free monthly Saturday show at Lil Indies in Orlando, where students and teachers perform.
- Free Shortform Manual: our 18-page guide to performing and hosting shortform improv shows, with game guides and exercises. Download it free.
